Parents & whānau FAQ

How do I find he wāhi haumaru spaces near me?
Use our search directory on the website to find cafes, shops, and venues displaying our tohu (emblem, symbol). You can search by location or business type, or switch to map view to see what’s nearby.
What does he wāhi haumaru mean for me and my pēpi?
It means you have safe, welcoming spaces where you can feed your pēpi however feels right for you. He wāhi haumaru means ‘a safe and supportive space’ in te reo Māori, and that’s exactly what we create – places where feeding is celebrated, not questioned.
Our kaupapa is inspired by te pā harakeke, symbolising how whānau support each other across generations. Whether you’re breastfeeding, chestfeeding, bottle feeding, or combination feeding, you belong here.
Is this only for breastfeeding?
Not at all!
He wāhi haumaru welcomes ALL forms of infant feeding. Whether you’re breastfeeding, chestfeeding, bottle feeding, or using any combination, you and your pēpi are welcome. Every feeding journey is different, and every parent deserves support.
What if I’m nervous about feeding in public?
It’s completely normal to feel nervous – many parents do. Here’s what can help:
Start small – try feeding in a He Wāhi Haumaru space where you know you’re welcome
Bring support – have a friend or whānau member with you for confidence
Know your rights – you can legally feed anywhere, anytime
Practice at home – get comfortable with your feeding routine
Join our community – connect with other parents who understand exactly how you feel
Remember, the more you do it, the more natural it becomes.
What can I expect from a he wāhi haumaru?
You can expect to feel genuinely welcome. Specifically:
Staff who smile and support you rather than making you feel uncomfortable
Freedom to feed openly without anyone asking you to cover up or move
Comfortable spaces where possible – quiet corners, good seating, room for your pram
Our tohu displayed proudly so you know you’re in the right place
First, know that you have every right to be there. Here’s what you can do:
Respect for your choices however you choose to feed your pēpi
What should I do if someone makes me feel unwelcome?
