Parent and Whānau FAQs

What is He Wāhi Haumaru?

He Wāhi Haumaru means ‘a safe and caring space’ in te reo Māori. We’re a community initiative that celebrates and supports breastfeeding and infant feeding across Aotearoa. We identify welcoming spaces for whānau to feed their pēpi comfortably, both in physical locations and online.

Our kaupapa is inspired by te pā harakeke, symbolising the interconnectedness of whānau across generations. Look for our distinctive tohu (symbol) in public spaces – it shows a breastfeeding friendly environment.

He Wāhi Haumaru is more than just a symbol; it’s a commitment to nurturing our pēpi and supporting whānau on their feeding journey.

Remember, it takes a whānau to feed a pēpi.

You’ve got this, we’ve got you.

Kei a koe tēnei. Kei a mātou koe hoki.

What can I expect from a Whānau Friendly Space?

In a He Wāhi Haumaru whānau Friendly Space, you can expect:

  1. The He Wāhi Haumaru tohu displayed prominently.
  2. A welcoming attitude towards breastfeeding and infant feeding in all areas.
  3. Staff who are supportive and respectful of your feeding choices.
  4. Freedom to breastfeed without being asked to cover up or move.
  5. A comfortable, clean area for feeding if you prefer privacy (in some locations).

These spaces are committed to providing a supportive environment for you and your pēpi. Remember, you have the right to breastfeed anywhere, anytime. If you ever feel unsupported, don’t hesitate to speak up or reach out to us for help.

What should I do if I experience discrimination against breastfeeding/chestfeeding or wish to make a complaint?

If you experience discrimination while breastfeeding or chestfeeding:

  1. Know your rights – it’s illegal to discriminate against someone breastfeeding in public.
  2. If you feel comfortable, calmly explain your rights to the person involved.
  3. Ask to speak with a manager or person in charge.
  4. Document the incident: note the time, place, and people involved.
  5. Contact the Human Rights Commission for advice or to make a complaint.
  6. Reach out to our He Wāhi Haumaru community for support.

You’re not alone. We’re here to support you and advocate for breastfeeding rights. Your experience can help improve awareness and prevent whānau feeling unsafe in the future.

How do I nominate a Whānau Friendly Space?

To nominate a whānau Friendly Space for He Wāhi Haumaru recognition:

  1. Visit our website and fill out the nomination form.
  2. Provide details about the space: name, location, and why you think they’re breastfeeding friendly.
  3. Share your positive experiences there.
  4. If possible, include photos of the space (with permission).

We’ll review your nomination and may reach out to the venue to discuss becoming an official He Wāhi Haumaru space. Your nominations help us grow our network of safe and supportive environments for breastfeeding whānau across Aotearoa.
